Abstract: The context of language teaching in Brazil traces the emergence of the first schools founded by the Jesuits that initially offered foreign language teaching as the classical Greek and Latin, followed by the modern one as French, German, English, among others. Even after a few centuries since foreign language started to be taught in Brazil, many problems can be observed yet in classrooms and results concerning to teaching and learning show themselves unsatisfactory. More than only problems involving policies and education system as: reduced hours for the subject, teacher training or lack of resources, there are also issues surrounding the culture and beliefs of learners and teachers, which constitute important aspects for reflection and action in this process, which can make possible significant changes in the teaching and learning foreign languages. Accordingly, this research aims to study the beliefs English language learning and teaching for students entering in a technician high school in Ponta Porã / MS, which is situated in the border region with Paraguay; checking how they are processed in that context and how understanding them can promote reflection of the teacher in order to perform actions of intervention that may reduce the mismatches between the teacher's way of teaching and the way that students believe to be the correct one to learn. The research is based on the study of referrals by ethnographic research, once it focuses the studies of culture in society, in work, the culture of teaching and learning languages. For its realization, first studies were made on beliefs and their research in Brazil and abroad. Then, data were collected on students and participants questionnaires and interviews over the four semesters, for, along with field notes, observing how were undertaken might modify the beliefs brought initially by these students, in order to minimize the conflicts caused by the mismatches between the way the teacher teaches and the students learn. The results show that in addition to the beliefs common to a large part of the contexts of English teaching in Brazil as the difficulty of learning English in public schools, private language schools as the best place to learn a foreign language and the importance of learning English as means of financial upward, the context brings out two other beliefs: the importance of the English language mainly related to the technical area which they are coursing and the difficulties to study English language because they had studied Spanish as foreign language in elementary school. Furthermore, it was noted that actions taken from the reflection of the teacher, may diminish the conflicts arising from differences between the ways students learn and the teacher teaches, making students feel encouraged to attend classes with motivation and also to use the language, not only for educational purposes, but in different situations in which English language can be used in their daily lives.
