Abstract: This work presents the development and simulation-based evaluation of control strategies applied to a laboratory drying oven whose original commercial controller became non operational. The thermal dynamics of the system were experimentally characterized, allowing the identification of a First Order Plus Dead Time (FOPDT) model capable of representing the oven’s heating behavior under disturbances and variations in power. Based on this model, a Proportional–Integral (PI) controller was designed using Internal Model Control (IMC) tuning rules, and a static feedforward action was incorporated to anticipate the steady-state power required to reach a given temperature setpoint. The performance of the PI+FF strategy was compared with the traditional On-Off control in multiple operating conditions, including different temperature setpoints and abrupt drops in temperature simulating door opening. The results show that the PI+FF controller eliminates oscillations, improves transient response, enhances temperature accuracy, and achieves higher energy efficiency for low and medium thermal loads. In contrast, the On-Off approach exhibited substantial oscillations, potential
actuator stress due to frequent switching, and limited capability to maintain high temperatures with stability. The findings indicate that physical implementation of the PI+FF controller is a feasible and effective solution to restore and improve the oven’s operation, offering a robust alternative for high-inertia thermal processes.

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the behavior of a Three-Phase Induction Motor (TPIM) using a power supply for the starting process and a power quality analyzer to monitor electrical current and voltage. The obtained data were compared with the performance characteristics provided in the motor catalog. The main focus of the analysis was to identify the presence of harmonics in the currents and voltages when different loads were applied to the motor shaft, evaluating their implications for power quality and system performance. The results were analyzed based on the limits established by the IEEE Std 519-2022 and IEC 61000-3-2 standards, which address harmonic distortion in voltage and current.

Abstract: The quality of lighting in sports environments is essential to ensure safety, visual comfort, and adequate conditions of use. The multi-sports court of UFGD – Unit II recently underwent a modernization with the replacement of metallic vapor luminaires with LED luminaires, which motivated the need to evaluate the lighting performance of the new system. This work aimed to analyze the illuminance, uniformity and energy efficiency of the court's lighting system after the renovation, comparing measurements performed in the field with simulations in the DIALux software and verifying compliance with ABNT NBR ISO/CIE 8995-1:2013. The study included the physical survey of the environment, the execution of measurements with lux meters, the digital modeling of the lighting system, the proposal of adjustments in the positioning and quantity of the existing luminaires and the evaluation of an alternative modernization with luminaires of greater luminous efficiency. The results showed that, although the illuminance has increased in relation to the previous system, it still does not meet the norm. The simulations indicated that the repositioning and installation of three luminaires guarantee compliance with the standard, but with low luminous efficacy, and that a modernized alternative provides better performance with lower energy consumption. The economic analysis demonstrated the feasibility of the proposal, which presented, for retrofit, a payback of 6.21 years, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 27.20% and a Net Present Value (NPV) of R$ 18,719.65. It is concluded that lighting interventions should be carried out using simulation as a design tool in order to provide an efficient system, ensuring visual performance and energy efficiency for sports areas.

Abstract: This study presents a comparative analysis of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions from a flex-fuel engine operating with gasoline, corn ethanol, and sugarcane ethanol. The physicochemical properties of the fuels were evaluated, including the higher heating value (HHV), exhaust gas temperature, and emissions of CO, unburned hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4). Experimental tests were conducted on a spark ignition engine, with fuel consumption and emissions monitored under different operating conditions (idle, medium, and high rotation). The results showed that although gasoline offers higher energy efficiency and range, it produces higher emissions of pollutants, particularly CO2 and NOx, negatively impacting the environment and public health. In contrast, sugarcane ethanol emerged as the most sustainable alternative, with lower GHG emissions and better combustion efficiency. Corn ethanol, while also renewable, generated higher NOx emissions compared to sugarcane ethanol. In conclusion, despite the high energy performance of gasoline, its emissions make it a less sustainable option, while sugarcane ethanol stands out as a more efficient and environmentally favorable alternative.
