Abstract: The Koran-bang-rê (Large Open Fields – Fields of Guarapuava) consist of a territory traditionally inhabited by the Kaingang since the pre-colonial period. However, traditional historiography, and even that which proposed writing an indigenous history for the region, privileged the history of conquest. With this proposition I aim to investigate the history of the Kaingang of the Koran-bang-rê from a perspective that connects temporalities. Starting from the rupture of the dichotomy between Prehistory/History, I seek to demonstrate continuities and transformations in Kaingang history in the region. I opt for the Ethnohistory method, which strives for interdisciplinarity to compose Indigenous History. Temporal connections, however, do not aim at a narrative about all aspects of history, but rather three hypotheses to be investigated: a) The presence of a large ring landfill in the vicinity of the TI Marrecas, and the
impetus with which the Kaingang defended this territory traditional, suggest that in the pre-colonial period the Koran-bang-rê were a major Kaingang center (ritual, political and territorial); b) That the Koran-bang-rê are the result of a process of territorialization that occurred in the pre-colonial period, a fact that was marked in the landscape by the construction of ring structures and burial mounds, and: c) That the Koran-bang-rê have been a reference territory not only in the pre-colonial period as a ritual, political and territorial center, but which remained during the colonial period.

Abstract: This dissertation presents the results of an applied oral history project developed with individuals who share memories related to the former Casa de Detenção de São Paulo, a prison institution central to the history of incarceration in the state of São Paulo, known as Carandiru, during the period from the 1980s to 2002, when it was closed. By engaging with diverse and, at times, conflicting narratives, the research puts into tension the ways in which the prison past remains present, taking orally expressed memory as its primary analytical framework. The central aim was to understand how Carandiru remains socially active through memory work that, as demonstrated by the documentary corpus, gives shape to a community of fate. From a methodological standpoint, the study mobilized procedures from life history oral history and testimonial oral history, the predominant narrative genres that grounded the constitution of a corpus composed of sixteen oral histories. In addition to an introduction devoted to the trajectory of the project and to procedural definitions, the dissertation is organized into three interdependent parts. The first part, of a core nature and entitled Histories in Carandiru (1980-2002), is dedicated to the presentation of the oral histories, organized into networks of collaborators and privileging the centrality of narrated experience. The second part, From Flamínio Fávero to Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns: the history of the Casa de Detenção de São Paulo, seeks to situate Carandiru within its social and historical context by addressing its antecedents, its repeated use over approximately fifty years of operation, and the process of closure that enabled the construction of Parque da Juventude. This transformation is analyzed as an enterprise inscribed within a broader project aimed at erasing the prison past. The third
part, entitled The Passage from History to Prison Memory through Testimony, is devoted to the analysis of the oral histories, drawing on the collective frameworks of memory. The dissertation argues that acts of memory carried out by former inmates of the Casa de Detenção de São Paulo contribute to an inversion in the regime of production of knowledge about the prison past, displacing its centrality from institutional history to memory in its testimonial expression. Prison testimony emerges as a practice of working through the past that intervenes in processes of resocialization by fostering the reconstruction of social bonds and the conditions for material survival. By demonstrating the organic character of a collective memory driven by survival, this research contributes to studies on prisons, memory, and testimony, as well as to an understanding of the forms of agency exercised by former prisoners under a democratic regime.

Abstract: This thesis analyzes, from a historical and legal perspective, the dispute over the Ñande Ru Marangatu Indigenous Land, located in the municipality of Antônio João, Mato Grosso do Sul, based on the examination of Writ of Mandamus nº. 25.463/DF, pending in the Federal Supreme Court between 2005 and 2024. The central object of the research is the relationship between the coloniality of power, the performance of the Brazilian State, especially the Judiciary, and the fundamental right of access to justice of indigenous peoples, with an empirical focus on the trajectory of the Kaiowa people in the struggle for the realization of their constitutionally recognized territorial rights. The general objective of the research is to understand how the judicial slowness, the decisional instability and the outcome of the writ of mandamus reveal structural limits of the Brazilian State in guaranteeing material access to justice in indigenous claims. As specific objectives, the thesis seeks: (i) to analyze historically the formation of the Brazilian State and its institutions from the permanence of the coloniality of power; (ii) to examine the role of the Judiciary in the judicialization of land conflicts involving indigenous peoples; (iii) to assess the concrete effectiveness of fundamental rights and guarantees in the Ñande Ru Marangatu case; and (iv) to reflect on possibilities of overcoming the monist legal model, based on plural dialogue and proposals for institutional reconfiguration. The methodology adopted is of a historical-analytical and interdisciplinary nature, articulating contributions from History, Law and decolonial studies. Descriptive and interpretative methods were used, with critical analysis of legal, administrative and normative documents, understood as historical sources. The conclusion of the thesis demonstrates that the Ñande Ru Marangatu case constitutes a paradigmatic example of internal colonialism, understood as a historical expression of the coloniality of power within the Brazilian nation-state. It is evident that,
although indigenous territorial rights are formally recognized by the Federal Constitution of 1988, their effectiveness is systematically made unfeasible by institutional practices that produce slowness, legal uncertainty and asymmetry between the subjects of the process. Access to justice, in this context, proves to be more formal than material, often becoming an instrument for the denial of rights. The research concludes the need to overcome traditional legal paradigms, defending the incorporation of intercultural perspectives, the recognition of legal plurality and the adoption of hermeneutical instruments capable of facing the historical inequalities that mark the relationship between the Brazilian State and indigenous peoples.
