Abstract: This doctoral dissertation analyzes the intellectual and political trajectory of the carioca lawyer José Jayme Ferreira de Vasconcellos in Mato Grosso from 1917 to 1945. The time frame in focus refers to the character’s arrival in Campo Grande, then a city located in the south of Mato Grosso, until the final period of the Estado Novo during the Getúlio Vargas administration. Although this delimitation is established, the events preceding Vasconcellos' migration are also investigated, particularly moments when he still lived in the federal capital, given that during this time he accumulated intellectual knowledge and interacted with politicians from Mato Grosso, particularly senator Antônio Francisco Azeredo and federal deputy Aníbal Benício de Toledo. With this proposal, the central objective of this research is to relate the political party activities of José Jayme Ferreira de Vasconcellos to the political
dynamics of the elites in Mato Grosso. Therefore, it is considered that the power structures in the country after the Proclamation of the Republic, in 1889, acquired new characteristics and requirements. Specifically in Mato Grosso, the newly installed regime changed the scenario of oligarchic disputes, thus creating a new context of political-institutional reorganization in the state and new practices of confrontation among the ruling groups. The republican discourse of progress and civilization contributed to the ambivalence of the mechanisms of political action within the region, namely the continuation of physical violence linked to the use of resources from the symbolic field, particularly political representations manifested in newspapers, books, and magazines. From then on, both accession and co-optation of influential individuals into the spheres of power became routine practices of the ruling elites, possessing specific cultural resources that composed the red tape system of Mato Grosso. Thus, the main hypothesis of this study proposes that the political dimension in Mato Grosso in the first
decades of the 20th century established new directions for the intellectual field, especially in Cuiabá and Campo Grande, by integrating intellectuals into the power spaces and contributing to political projects, alliances, and party agreements. José Jayme Ferreira de Vasconcellos is considered a mediating journalist here because he influenced the construction and dissemination of cultural assets connected to politics, particularly through the “Jornal do Comércio,” a communication channel of which he was the owner.

Abstract: The main focus of the thesis is the discussion of the impacts generated by the arrival of colonization fronts in the lands occupied by the Kaiowa, especially from the creation and implementation of the National Agricultural Colony of Dourados, which incorporates the current municipality of Douradina. This event consolidates the initiative to expropriate indigenous lands by the State to donate lots to settlers. The indigenous body imposed territorial confinement as part of the indigenous policies adopted by the Brazilian state, causing ãy kañy (time of confusion) in the temporality used by the indigenous people. Fearing the total destruction that had begun with the loss of occupied territories and the spread of
hitherto unknown diseases, the Kaiowa took refuge in ymaguare (primordial temporality), even though actions aimed at indigenous people proposed their integration into “civilized” society”, generated the opposite effect, that is, the intensification of attachment to the ava reko (way of being/living) of their primordial ancestors. In this way, they continued and continue to resist and fight for the territory occupied by their ancestors. Also using ymaguare, they seek to find answers to the challenges and difficulties proposed by the new temporality without giving up remaining in Ka’aguyrusu (the great forests). The research mobilizes methodological efforts that include documentary analysis, discussion with historical and anthropological bibliography and dialogue with Kaiowa interlocutors, a large part of my own family. As contribution, the effort is to record and analyze the Kaiowá perception of the history they have experienced in Ka’aguyrusu since the arrival of the economic occupation fronts.

Abstract: The present thesis aims to analyze the stories of crime and violence occurring along the border between Brazil and Bolivia, specifically in the cities of Corumbá (Brazil) and Puerto Quijarro/Puerto Suárez (Bolivia), through their illegal cocaine trafficking networks. The research originated from readings of O Cruzeiro magazine about the murder of councilman Edu Rocha, who was brutally killed by machine gun fire in 1959. It also seeks to examine the emblematic jury trial held in the city of Corumbá, where the
defendant was acquitted despite the police investigation being filled with material and testimonial evidence that would have convicted the public servant Carivaldo Salles. Furthermore, the research intends to highlight the corruption of public agents, the willful ignorance of National Information Service (SNI) agents during the Military Dictatorship, the expansion of clandestine air routes, and the outsourcing of guilt. To this end, copies of the legal proceedings regarding Edu Rocha's case, criminal records from both the Corumbá Forum and the Mato Grosso do Sul Court of Justice (TJMS) Library, SNI reports made available by the Superior Military Court (STM), issues of O Cruzeiro magazine that covered the councilman's murder, clippings from O Globo newspaper, and decree-laws were analyzed to support the understanding of the topic under examination.

Abstract: This research examined the “Banho de São João” of Corumbá in Mato Grosso do Sul, a cultural manifestation that takes place every year on the night of June 23rd. It involves bathing the floats carrying the image of São João in the waters of the Paraguay River. Before the bathing ritual, the São João celebrants host their guests in their homes, throwing parties. However, the event’s highlight occurs at Porto Geral, following the procession along Cunha e Cruz Slope. The Corumbá City Hall is responsible for organizing and planning the event at the port. So, the goal was to figure out how these different São João celebrations, which the celebrants host, work and what their main characteristics are. Additionally, the role played by the local government in the last decades, especially between 1980 and 2019, was investigated, along with how these actions impacted the event. Through the method of oral history, it
became possible to study the diverse ways of celebrating the festival as well as the religious, economic, political, and tourist interests involved. Interviews with public officials and celebrants revealed that the process is permeated by interests, resistances, conflicts, and convergences, resulting in many celebrations within this single festivity.
