Abstract: This doctoral thesis investigates the inadequate management of urban solid waste in the municipality of Parintins, in the state of Amazonas, Brazil, with a focus on the socio-environmental and territorial consequences of the improper siting of a landfill near the State University of Amazonas. The research draws on contributions from Geography, Law, and Marxist critique to analyze the negligence of public authorities in implementing basic sanitation policies and the violation of fundamental rights of Amazonian populations. It is based on the understanding that space is historically produced by unequal social relations, and that the mismanagement of waste reflects the invisibility of peripheral territories in urban planning processes. The methodology combines bibliographic review, document analysis, field observation, and interviews with local actors. The analysis shows that although Parintins is a cultural and touristic hub in the Amazon, its urban infrastructure has not kept pace with population growth and increased consumption, resulting in a growing waste production and the persistence of disposal practices that are incompatible with the principles of sustainability and socio-environmental justice. The sections of the thesis explore, among other topics, the concept of undesirable commodities, the role of the State in public policy implementation (or omission), the work of waste pickers in the recycling chain, and technological innovations for waste treatment. The case of the Parintins landfill is analyzed as a symbol of territorial inequality and the precarious realization of the right to the city and to a healthy environment. The study proposes guidelines for more efficient, democratic, and environmentally appropriate waste management, highlighting the need for a new sanitary landfill, improved selective collection systems, support for waste picker cooperatives, and the adoption of sustainable technologies.

Abstract: The constitution of Indigenous territories in Brazil is marked by historical processes of expropriation, confinement, and denial of rights, expressed through multiple forms of social, economic, political, and symbolic vulnerability. In Mato Grosso do Sul, particularly in the Cone South Health Region of Mato Grosso do Sul, these processes are intensified, resulting in the worsening of mental illness among Indigenous populations. This thesis aims to analyze the interrelations between processes of deterritorialization and precarious territorialization and the psychological suffering experienced by Indigenous peoples in the region, using as an empirical field the care provided at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Grande Dourados (HU-UFGD) between 2021 and 2023. The research adopts a qualitative approach, grounded in critical Health Geography, territorial studies, and Indigenous epistemologies, integrating documentary analysis, participant observation, and the author’s professional experience as a hospital social worker. Data were systematized from twenty cases monitored in the HU-UFGD psychiatry outpatient clinic and Psychosocial Care Unit, combined with secondary information (IBGE, DATASUS) and accounts from professionals in the Indigenous health care network. The results highlight the prevalence of severe depressive episodes, psychotic episodes, and substance abuse, often associated with domestic, sexual, and institutional violence, mourning, loss of territory, and community disintegration. The analysis points to the absence of culturally appropriate public policies, the fragility of the psychosocial care network in the region, and the lack of specialized services aimed at Indigenous mental health. The study reveals that Indigenous women and girls are the most affected, facing additional layers of vulnerability related to gender, ethnicity, and territory. It is concluded that Indigenous mental illness in the Dourados macroregion cannot be understood solely through a biomedical lens but must be analyzed in light of the relationships between health, territory, and social justice. The research reaffirms the centrality of territory, spirituality, and traditional knowledge for Indigenous well-being, indicating the need for public policies and care practices to be formulated in light of Indigenous epistemologies and the analytical contributions of Health Geography.; Brasil-pe umi tekoha indígena ojejapo ha ojejoko heta ára rupi peteĩ tapere ojehecháva ñemosãirõ, ñemboty ha tekombo’e ojehechauka’ỹva rehe, ha péicha ojehecha hetaichagua teko vai rehegua: tekoha, tekoha renda, economía, política ha ñe’ẽ rehegua. <description>Título: Zoneamento ambiental como instrumento da gestão territorial da Unidade de Planejamento e Gerenciamento (UPG) Iguatemi, Mato Grosso do Sul

Abstract: This thesis has as its main objective the proposal of an environmental zoning framework as an instrument of territorial management for the Iguatemi Planning and Management Unit (UPG), with an emphasis on a systemic and integrated approach aimed at analyzing and interpreting the socio-environmental aspects of the territory. The study seeks to identify, classify, and map the physical and socioeconomic components that make up the landscape, with the objective of supporting proposals for the sustainable use of natural resources and the territorial planning of the study area. The choice of the Iguatemi UPG is justified by the growing expansion of productive activities, such as eucalyptus and soybean monocultures, as well as extensive livestock farming, which have exerted significant pressure on local ecosystems. These intensive land uses have contributed to the intensification of erosion processes, the fragmentation and discontinuity of native vegetation, the degradation of water resources, and the progressive loss of biodiversity. The methodology is grounded in the theoretical frameworks of authors such as Mateo Rodríguez (1994), who proposes a systemic structure for environmental zoning, and Brugnolli (2020), who emphasizes the importance of integrating physical and human aspects in territorial planning. For cartographic production and spatial analysis, tools such as ArcGIS 10.8.2 (ESRI®) are employed to generate thematic maps and cartographic syntheses, alongside drone technology for acquiring high-resolution imagery, thereby enhancing the accuracy of the environmental diagnosis. The presence of Indigenous territories and rural settlements within the Iguatemi UPG adds further complexity to the zoning process, requiring the inclusion of socioeconomic, cultural, and land tenure considerations. Critical elements analyzed include the concentration of wildfires, land-use and occupation conflicts, and the socioenvironmental vulnerability of traditional and settled populations. The study highlights that unplanned and environmentally disconnected land use is a major contributor to land degradation. In this context, the development of a detailed and technically robust environmental diagnosis proved essential as a preliminary step for any land recovery and management strategy. Therefore, this research seeks to integrate technical and scientific knowledge with the regional socio-environmental reality, establishing zoning as a strategic tool for analysis and intervention. It aims to contribute to the mitigation of environmental impacts, support the formulation of public policies focused on environmental conservation, and propose territorial management guidelines that promote the well-being and quality of life of local communities.
