Abstract: This doctoral thesis describes the research that investigated the communicative practices of deaf students through Smartphone Instant Messaging Applications (SIMA) - Facebook, WhatsApp e Facebook Messenger – as potentials for communicative educational change. It is a documental explorative research under a transdisciplinary perspective with a qualitative approach and inspiration from retrospective ethnography. The research had as general objective to characterize and to present the deaf students’ communication through SIMA as a possibility for use in educational practices at school. The specific objectives were: a) to indicate and distinguish prescriptive characteristics and curricular guidelines regarding the communication at Brazilian school education and the accordance to the sociocultural and linguistic specificities of the deaf students; b) to describe the communication practices of deaf students through SIMA; c) to reflect on the use of AMIS at communications between deaf-deaf and deaf-hearing, relating them to the communicative prescriptions and language teaching at regular schools. The study is based at the Bordieuan theory about the school, the linguistic code, the linguistic market and the capital, as well as at contributions from scholars in the field of communication, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), inclusion and deaf studies at education. The initial hypothesis indicates a mismatch between communicative practices provided at/by the school and the sociocommunicative reality of deaf students, which brings to these agents a blocked communication and a limited citizenship. Using the Prescriptive-Descriptive-Reflexive method (PDR), it was possible to perceive that the way of communication and language teaching at schools are still anchored at the text tradition, written and spoken, and with the presence of Libras for communicative mediation for deaf students at the classroom; actually, it is a distanced manner of communication evidenced at the screenshots of the smartphones of three students self-styled deaf. The obtained results lead to suggest that education incorporates, at its curriculum and its practices, this arrangement of languages that results in the textual multimodality requested by the reality of the connected Network Society. What is noted is that the impracticability of this arrangement at the educational context contributes for a double neglection of the regular school, for not giving opportunity to access to the social communicative reality, mediated by the Internet, and for restricting the communication with deaf students to the artificial method of Libras. This fact shows that these students experience a communication sometimes blocked, sometimes distorted, which impairs their citizenship and the accumulation of linguistic, social and cultural capital provided by the school.
