Apropriações, impropriedades editoriais e produções cartográficas relativas à representação do Rio De La Plata em atlas neerlandeses do Século XVII

Abstract

This article aims at analyzing some intellectual, editorial and commercial attitudes regarding the production and circulation of two geographical charts, from the 17th century, representing Paraguay, or Rio de la Plata. The cartographic production and the graphic resources from the Dutch editorial firms, the mercantilists appropriations, and the inconsistencies between the maps (visual texts) and the correlated corographic texts constitute the focus of the analysis. The sources are, primarily, the maps and works (mainly the Atlas), in witch the geographical charts mentioned above been repeatedly published. The theoretical approach is in dialogue with historians affiliated to the New Cultural History, especially Roger Chartier, and authors of the, so-called, New History of Cartography, especially Brian Harley and Jerry Brotton. Simultaneously with the analysis of Dutch cartography production and marketing of the seventeenth century, the article also looks at the attitude of the Jesuit historiography of the twentieth century in the face of these maps, as well as the influence of this school on the latest historiographical production.
